Out of the Ashes - 2007

The week of October 14th - October 20th is the YWCA’s international “Week Against Violence”. During this week, New Mexico Highland’s University’s (NMHU) Fine Arts Department will host a Community Iron Pour against Sexual Violence. This is an opportunity for NMHU and the Las Vegas community to unite together and make a stand against a violence overwhelming our society.

Iron pouring requires a tribe, or a community of reliable, experienced people to work together and help an artist create a functional, expressive piece of art. It requires the same tribal support to help a victim of sexual abuse become a functional, expressive survivor. This event can mirror that process. By uniting together as a university, a community, artists, survivors, and families, we can help heal on a larger scale.
There are multiple parts to this event. The first part takes place Monday October 15th, & Wednesday October 17th. On these days, we will be holding free self defense classes.  Monday the 15th will be a women’s only class, and Wednesday the 17th will be a co-ed class.  These functions will be held from 7 -9pm at the Wilson Complex.

The second part, is designing sand mold tiles.  Blank sand molds will be set up and there will be someone available to explain how to work with the materials. People whose lives have been affected by sexual abuse will be able to express their emotions regarding these experiences by designing small tiles in these molds. This is an opportunity to make a non- confrontational, physical stand against the violence perpetrated against them. The molds will be poured later and then permanently placed for display in the community.  The days for designing tiles are as follows:  Friday Oct. 19th 1 – 4pm at the NMHU foundry (11th and Rosenwald), and Saturday Oct. 20th 3 – 5 pm, also at the foundry.

The third part is the actual pouring of the molds which will take place Saturday October 20th. We will begin pouring the molds at approximately 5:00pm and run past dark. This time schedule is not only to show the beauty of an evening pour, but also to reclaim the night for our community as a time that we can feel safe.   It is a Take Back the Night event, and we will have speakers from Community Based Services, the District Attorney’s Victim Advocacy program, the LV police department, and NMHU campus police.  There will also be live music and refreshments.

It is time for NMHU in partnership with community based organizations to be a beacon of hope to our community, in making a stand against sexual violence. This event offers a wonderful opportunity for both University and Community to not only make it known we won’t tolerate violence, but to be a part of the healing process. We are grateful to everyone’s support for this project, and we ask for your cooperation, and assistance in making it successful. We look forward to a successful second year with this event, an event that celebrates working together for change, not mourning the violence of our society.

The secret of life is to have a task, something you devote your entire life to, something you bring everything to, every minute of the day for the rest of your life. And the most important thing is, it must be something you cannot possibly do. "
