Looks like a carve into resin-bonded sand.
I dig the work! It looks great-- How much finishing work did you have to do on it?

Yes, the technique involves carving pieces of resin bonded sand that fit tightly together. carving with a grinder, die grinder, and drill to remove sand and create channels for the metal to flow, which also happens to be the casting.
I didn't do much finish work to it, just cut the sprues off and sandblasted it a little.
